Statement on National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

What began as Orange Shirt Day in recognition of Phyllis Webstad’s truth is also now the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation.

Ottawa New Music Creators affirms the role the arts can and must play in educating all about the truth of residential schools and other instruments of genocide that Canada enacted on Indigenous peoples.

Further, we recognize that new music is a space that needs to continue to be broadened such that Indigenous artists are fully and properly represented.

We commit to ongoing self-education and continuously seek ways to hold space for Indigenous voices such that this truth is heard.
