Hayden McGowan (b.1994) is an Ottawa-based composer, multi-instrumentalist, and audio engineer. An undergraduate music student at Carleton University, Hayden currently studies composition under Roddy Ellias. Though trained classically, his style has been fostered through a vast stylistic journey, having explored projects in a variety of idioms from folk music to 8-bit electronic music.
While Hayden considers himself a composer first, he is also a fervent academic; a Dean’s List honours student with a special interest in music philosophy, aesthetics, and theology. After completing his undergraduate degree, he plans to pursue an academic career in tandem with his composition career.
Hayden has also worked as a soundtrack composer. In 2015, Hayden composed and produced the soundtrack for the popular fantasy title The Elder Scrolls V: Maslea, a community-made expansion pack for the critically acclaimed Bethesda game, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. A second “chapter” for this expansion is currently in production, the music for which Hayden will again compose.
In his central work as a contemporary-music composer, Hayden considers himself “...directly and proudly influenced by Toru Takemitsu, R. Murray Schafer, Alexander Scriabin, Morton Feldman, Anton Webern, Maurice Ravel, Karlheinz Stockhausen, and so many others.”
